At a family reunion in a campground in Missouri, my son-in-law proposed to my baby. A million things go through your head - will she still call you, need you, seek your advice or will you lose her forever to this boy?
As dread and panic started to settle in, my amazing daughter leaned over and told me, "Okay...now we need a date and get ready to plan this thing." Okay, she didn’t say that immediately - there was the ring inspection, the phone calls, the celebratory brunch but before I began to wallow in true self-pity she did let me know that she still needed me.
Now my daughter is a planner and she gave us both plenty of time to work out the details and allow our creative juices to flow. We started ticking off the large ticket items and when we got down to the cake she decided that she instead wanted donuts (cake has never been her thing).
Donuts are easy. We contacted one of the most popular donut stores in Raleigh and they ended up delivering them to the venue on the wedding day. Done! Well...almost. You need to display them. You can’t have this beautiful wedding by throwing boxes of donuts on a table and calling it a day! They need to be artistically displayed and match with the general ambiance of your wedding.
So we started pricing donut stands. Don’t get me wrong…some of the donut stands were beautiful. Wooden displays with hooks for the donuts, they were artistic and natural ...and more than $200. I couldn’t do it. How do you pay $200 for something you are only going to use once!!!
And then what do you do with it….put it in your closet for your shoes to hang on? I don’t even have that many shoes. So the donuts got pushed back a little. Let’s check off something else. Sometime later, I am browsing through Dollar Store and I wander down the plates and glasses aisle. And then it hits me…we will build our own donut stand and it won’t cost $200 and we can use it again!
So I made this (yes, that’s an actual picture of my daughter’s desert table)…
from this…
So of course in my world, $6.50 ($3.00 for the two plates and martini glass and $3.50 for a silk succulent from Michaels) is so much better than $200. I did make four of these stands but we’re still only talking $26.
It’s fast, inexpensive and ended up being really perfect on the dessert buffet. All in all, a beautiful way to display a wedding treat.
