Times have changed. I remember getting candy or sachets for wedding favors. They were great, but once eaten or that sweet scent had evaporated, you were left with trash. Millennials see the world in a new way. The world is to be respected. You get out of it what you put into it and I must say, our generation didn’t put much into it. Okay, I’ll get off my soapbox and go back to wedding favors.
My daughter wanted something that was alive. Something that not only looked good but actually could thrive...like love. Corny I know but I love it. So where do you go now? You can’t give flowers because that defeats the thriving concept. Can’t quite express undying love if your symbol dies. So we needed something that would continue living. House plants, African violets...beautiful but expensive. Succulents fit the bill. Etsy and Amazon both offered bulk succulents at an amazing deal. So now that we had our plants we needed the container.
So I did what I like best - browsed the stores that might help. In this case, it was Michael's. I found several vessels that would work for the succulents: small clay pots, small decorative pots and small mason jars. I must admit that I have a special place in my heart for mason jars. My mom loved to can. She was willing to suffer burns from removing the jars from boiling water to enjoy those amazing canned tomatoes every year. I didn’t inherit the talent to can, but I’m trying. But that’s for another blog....today is about mini mason jars and favors. My daughter chose the mason jars.
Pretty, right??!! So now that the two main decisions were made, we just needed to build 125 of these. The jars came with lids but because we are filling with plants, we didn’t need the lids. But I didn’t want the ridges showing so I decided to cover with a burlap ribbon.
Now we just need to build. So basically we got succulent soil (Amazon has everything!) and filled the jars.
And finally: added the succulents.
It was beautiful. Because these were the favors, we killed two birds with one stone and decided to make these our table assignments as well. Such a great idea! Ashley printed out the table assignments using Avery business cards and we glued them to wooden skewers. We placed them in the jars and done. It took an afternoon to complete but once finished, we had 125 beautiful wedding favors.
How to Make Beautiful Wedding Favors
Supplies
Instructions:
Fill the favor jars halfway with succulent soil.
Carefully transplant the succulents into the favors jars on top of the soil.
Slowly add the remaining soil to the top, confirming the roots are covered.
Succulents don't like a lot of water so carefully add a small amount of water when initially transplanted and then don't water again for 2-3 weeks.
If using for table assignments: Print out assignment and glue to wooden dowel. Insert into favors.
Wait for the amazing reactions.
